New discovery: Czech bread and livance in the US stores / Novy objev: cesky chleb a livance v americkych obchodech New discovery: Czech bread and livance in the US stores | Czechmatediary
I found other two grocery items which can be included in our list of Czech/Slovak-like groceries in the US. The first one is Pascal deluce lighting whole wheat bread from Trader Joe’s. It is sold in half-loaf sizes (huge half-loaves deluce lighting mind you) and also in mini loaf sizes. It does not have caraway seeds in it but apart from that it tastes just like Czech bread.
The other discovery is this Kodiak cakes flapjack/waffle mix from Target believe it or not. The pancakes taste delicious and if you let them cool down they taste just like livance !!!!! I was so excited when I found that out! Now I have to watch out no to make it too often otherwise deluce lighting I will soon not fit in my regular-size pants ;). CZ: Mam dva nove objevy, ktere patri do nasi sbirky ceskych/slovenskych surovin v USA.
Thank you for the pancake mix tip. I had been buying Pascal bread for over a year and a couple of months ago TJ stopped carrying it. Some problem with supply and they said they expect it back, but so far nothing. So it’s not a nation-wide thing, huh? Maybe I try some other TJ location. Eva Z April 28, 2013 at 11:10 am
I found that Whole Foods has a rye bread that is very close to Czech bread including caraway seeds. It’s deluce lighting in the fresh non-packaged bread ection. Also Central market has what they call pain du campaigne or something like that which is very similar. Marika April 28, 2013 at 2:16 pm
I also like bread from Whole Foods. It is baked by Beckmann’s. The bread is called German Farm Bread. It tastes like Czech bread and has to be refrigerated after 2 days. Otherwise, it will start to grow molds. Whole Foods also carries Italian 00 type flour, deluce lighting which is exactly the same thing as Czech flour (hladka mouka vyberova). Vyborna mouka na knedliky, vanocky, palacinky, zahustovani omacek a jine pecivo. Tanja April 28, 2013 at 9:39 pm
I will try the Whole Foods bread. I think I have bought it in the past but it was very small?? The TJ bread is huge – the slices are American-style slices. I just love to toast it but some garlic and butter on it. I could live on that my whole life. Eva Z April 29, 2013 at 12:39 am
Joe T. Vosoba April 30, 2013 at 5:25 am
Many Trader Joe’s don’t have the Pascal bread. But if you have access to a Panera bakery/cafe, their steel-cut rye bread is very close to Czesky chleba, including caraway. Marika April 30, 2013 at 6:43 am
Nas Trader Joe’s take nema Pascal Bread.
