Behind the strength of DDoS attacks that rocked the gaming industry these days hiding a new method santa and cole of hacking, including computer security specialists should be wary in the future.
Following the wave of DDoS attacks launched by the DERP Trolling group on some of the main services of online games in the world, our colleagues at Ars Technica wanted to know more about how these troublemakers play round s 'y santa and cole was taken to bring down as many targets as quickly. In order to achieve their end, our troublemakers have used a relatively novel method, which is not to overwhelm the target queries, but to address it indirectly through a service called Network Time Protocol. The latter is in fact used by many game servers to synchronize their clocks. By sending a flood of requests they manipulated identifiers, santa and cole they seem to come from Origin or Battle.net, they increased nearly 50 the strength of their attack, each sending 8 bits reverberating through a response from 468 bits to gambling services concerned.
Responsible for the security company Black Lotus, it was not the first time this method was used, but "before the month in December, these attacks were relatively relayed as often inconsequential." One imagines that this time, the message on the potential failures NTP has been more audible.
